FABTECH 2016 – A Great Event for the PFERD Team!

Another FABTECH Expo has come and gone, and at PFERD we believe that 2016’s version was a huge success!  FABTECH’s importance in the fabrication, welding and finishing industries is reflected in the strong attendance both in number of attendees and in the vast number of geographical markets around the world visitors represented.  This year’s FABTECH drew attendees from 120 countries with a total of 31,110 visitors over the three day event.

FABTECH gives us at PFERD an invaluable opportunity to meet face-to-face with end users.  We had several visitors this year that brought their metalworking challenges directly to our booth.  Not only does this give us an opportunity to use our expertise to solve problems, but it provides us with an opportunity to see some of the unusual applications our customers deal with on a daily basis.

FABTECH is a premier venue for us to highlight the breadth of our portfolio and demonstrate the innovative solutions we bring to users.  Unique, innovative products such as our  CC-GRIND®-SOLID grinding disc, POLIFAN-CURVE® flap disc and DUODISC® cutting and grinding disc were featured in our grinding booth where visitors saw firsthand how these products perform in true applications, and the benefits these products bring to their everyday tasks.

While we are well known for our grinding, cutting and surface finishing applications with hand tools, our brush station gave visitors a first-hand look at our power brush solutions for industrial applications on CNC and robotic machines.  Work pieces and videos highlighted deburring applications with our M-BRAD® composite brush portfolio which focused on overall value through optimization of work processes was a primary focus of our message to visitors.

The PFERDVALUE® program  which highlights how our products and solutions address concerns with operator health and safety, as well as delivering cost savings and productivity increases really resonated with attendees.  A fun and interactive way we were able to demonstrate factors such as noise, vibration, haptics and emissions was with our interactive ERGOCUBE displays.  These displays gave a simulated physical experience of how PFERD’s products improve upon these key areas of concern for operators in the metalworking industry.

Improve Productivity with PFERD’s Specially Designed Carbide Burs

PFERD’s High-Performance line of carbide burs offers what an ordinary bur can’t. Designed for specific applications on specific materials, these burs deliver optimum performance and value.

These burs offer the advantages of reduced overall cost with reduced consumption, and maximum material removal, which all contribute to their superior cost-to-performance ratio.  

Many of the burs in this line are uniquely designed for outstanding performance on some of the most commonly machined metals:

  • STEEL Cut for Steel and Cast Steel: Delivers maximum performance with smooth but aggressive operating action. High stock removal leads to significant time savings while lower thermal loads protect the work piece.
  • INOX Cut for Stainless Steel: Innovative tooth geometry enables outstanding stock removal and longer tool life to achieve high-grade quality finishes when processing Austenitic and Duplex Stainless. Yields up to 100% increase in stock removal and generates less heat preventing material discoloration.
  • CAST Cut for Cast Iron: Provides very good chip removal, up to 100% when compared with conventional cross cut burs, with significantly increased aggressiveness. Less vibration and noise leads to smooth milling operation.  
  • ALU/NF Cut for Aluminum and Non-Ferrous metals: ideally suited for coarse machining, these burs generate high stock removal in material such as aluminum, aluminum alloys, copper, bronze, and brass.

Application specific burs that deliver unique benefits in the areas of increased productivity are also included in the high performance program:

  • EDGE cut for Edge Profiling: A complete system that is ideal for edge beveling, radiusing, and chamfering that saves time in process piping, plumbing, and pump design applications.

Successful Solutions: PFERD Provides Deflashing Improvements to Reebok, CCM

PFERD was given the challenge of solving a problem in the deflashing of professional hockey stick blades. At the time, the blades were deflashed in a multi-step process which used a sandpaper/brush wheel and then finished with a variety of abrasives such as an orbital sander and hand sanding.

PFERD applications engineers were able to test the products with the M-BRAD® brush and use a two step process which simplifies the process and makes it more efficient while maintaining the quality.

The current brush set has 10,000 blades on it. That’s about 10 weeks of production. The brushes are lasting quite long and have freed up a bottleneck.

M-BRAD® Brushes are now being used to finish the blades of professional hockey sticks for Reebok & CCM. These sticks are used by professional hockey players such as Crosby, Tavares, Hossa, Landeskog, Nugent-Hopkins, and Duchene.
