SPRING MAKE 2019

In April, PFERD had the opportunity to be part of a one-of-a-kind event hosted by Lincoln Electric called “Spring Make”. Celebrating its third year, Spring Make is the only conference held specifically for Makers, marrying skill building and brand building into one exciting event. Makers have the opportunity to connect with brands that are interested in or have already invested in influencer, ambassador and spokesperson programs.

What is a “Maker”? There is no single definition, but at its root, it’s someone who creates for practical use as well as building for fun and shares his or her ideas, projects, and knowledge with anyone anywhere in the world as part of a larger community.

Adam Savage probably said it best: “Humans do two things that make us unique from all other animals; we use tools, and we tell stories. And when you make something, you’re doing both at once.”

By all accounts, this 3-day event was a huge success. With over 130 Makers from as far away as Denmark, the conference gave them an opportunity to sharpen their skills, network with other Makers and promote their own brands. There was an obvious bond formed between this group of individuals, and all participants got a real sense that they are part of a community.

Being one of a select group of suppliers at this event, PFERD had the opportunity to personally meet with some of the superstars of the Maker community, such as Zach Haberholz, Jimmy DiResta, Laura Kampf, Paul Jackman, Paul Pinto, and Chris Zeppieri. The PFERD team thoroughly enjoyed having one-on-one conversations with these talented individuals to not only talk about the latest innovations and solutions PFERD has to help them with their metalworking projects, but to also engage with them on a more personal level.

As the sole abrasives sponsor for the event, PFERD provided a wide variety of products for the Makers to use while working on projects during the conference. In addition, PFERD facilitated a “Hands-On” area headed up by Technical Sales Manager John Thompson, along with other PFERD technical experts to answer questions and provide technical tips and techniques to guide them through any of their metal prep to finishing needs.

Some products which attendees found especially helpful in their projects included PFERD’s new diamond coated brush for scale removal, the COMBICLICK® quick-mounting disc system, and our interleaved POLIVLIES® CO-COOL flap discs for metal removal and finishing. Unused consumables from the event were donated to the Ohio Boys Town organization, a local youth support program.

Spring Make showcased this group’s diversity in skill levels of all ranges, genders, and backgrounds. PFERD was proud to participate in this unique event and was thoroughly impressed with the creativity of this group of Makers.

New Sleeves for Cut-Off Wheel Samples

Designed for initial use at FABTECH 2011 to hand out samples of the new .045″ T-SGP wheels for Steel, the new sleeve is designed to hold a single wheel. The dimension is large enough to hold up to a 6″ diameter wheel. The same sleeve will be used for 4-1/2″, 5″ and 6″ wheels.

The package is more versatile than our present Test Paks with 3 wheels. The new pack has a series of check boxes to indicate wheel diameter, thickness and workpiece material. It may therefore be used for most cut-off wheels.

If you have trunk stock, frequently give an end user a wheel or two to try, you can upgrade your presentation by requesting empty test pak sleeves from Marketing. We’ll be happy to send you a supply for your personal use!
